Originally constructed in 1905 as a salon and artist’s residence, La Playa Hotel remains a beloved institution that honors the deep bohemian heritage of Carmel-by-the-Sea. Following an extensive $20 million renovation in summer 2023, the property has been tastefully enhanced, all while preserving the quiet eclecticism for which the hotel is known. The renovation carefully covered all aspects of the hotel, from the welcoming lobby to the commodious corners of Bud’s bar and the luxuriously appointed guest rooms with sunfilled windows beckoning the ocean breeze. Ready to welcome a new generation of guests, the transformation is classic, richly layered, and intimate — incorporating new designs and signature components.

The design of La Playa Hotel by Post Company naturally cultivates a familiar warmth and eccentricity. Post Company reenergized the historic structure with a modern approach that continues to shape the building’s ongoing evolution. Bud's at La Playa
Preserving a Legend
As a beloved historic institution, Bud’s was handled with care. Updates were consciously intended to feel as though they are simply a deeper reflection of what was always there. With a range of intimate nooks and crannies, the newly imagined Bud’s offers more room for both loud camaraderie and intimate scheming. While considered as a dark and moody space, added splashes of color and textile offers the slightest hint that the bar is evolving and ready to welcome a new generation of guests.

In-Room Barmoire
Our Barmoires were custom fabricated for each guest room and suite. Each piece features a warm, rich wood bar with marble countertops and brushed brass finishes. It is adorned with specialty liquors in standard sizes, glassware, and a collection of curated cocktail recipes. A nod to the elegant manor parlour rooms of yesteryear, the Barmoire is an invitation for a spontaneous gathering or a quiet drink, where creation, conversation, and the occasional indulgence are welcomed.

Developed and designed to coincide with the vast property-wide transformation, the brand identity was given a loving update that pays homage to La Playa’s 120 year history and rich heritage as a bohemian enclave. Rinker is a brand-centered graphic firm focused on crafting unique identities and supporting visual systems.
